Financial Need: The U.S. Department of Education determines your amount of need
based on a standard formula. This formula is established by Congress,
and the data received from the FAFSA is used in the formula.
Factors it considers are the student’s income or assets, the
parent’s incomes (if the student is a dependent), the number of
family members currently in attendance of postsecondary institutions,
and the size of the household.2
Pell Grant- The Federal Pell Grant program provides need-based tuition
assistance. Because it is a federal grant, it does not need to be
repaid. Determining factors for this grant include the student’s
expected family contribution or EFC, the cost of the institution, the
student’s enrollment status, and whether the student attends for a
full academic year or less.1 The maximum amount for this
award for the 2011-12 academic year can be up to $5,500.1 Your award amount may vary depending on your financial need. Your school typically applies the funds from the Pell Grant to your
school costs, but you can also be paid directly. The institute will
notify you of your award amount.
Unsubsidized Loans- Unsubsidized loans are loans offered to students that are not
based on financial needs. These loans are awarded at the start of a
term but are not expected to be repaid until the student has
graduated. Unlike subsidized loans, unsubsidized loans accrue
interest while the student is in school.2
Subsidized Loans- Subsidized loans are loans awarded based on the student’s
financial need. Similar to an unsubsidized loan, subsidized loans are
not expected to be repaid until the student graduates.2 While in school, interest does not accrue on the loans.
